Interview

What is your inspiration?

Nature, life… Everything that surround us and also all what’s inside us :)

What music do you listen to/are you influenced by?

A wide spectrum of non-mainstream music. From classical music, through ambient, jazz, rock and metal (psychedelic, progressive, stoner etc.), movie or game scores and of course electronic music in various varieties.

What are you bringing to Bohemia?

Lots of good music and positive energy :D

Have you ever been here?

Oh yes! Many times, and always looking forward to come back to Czech again!

How do you see Czech psychedelic/psytrance scene compare to others?

Every scene is different and has its own unique characteristics. The Czech scene is definitely one of my favourites. I’ve been invited here many, many times and I always come back with a big smile on my face :)

Your favourite festival?

Almost every festival I had the pleasure of playing at had something wonderful about it, Samsara and S.U.N. Festivals in Hugary, Dakini in Romania, UFO Bufo, Digital Forest and Tribe Calling in Czech Rep., Burning Mountain in Switzerland, Egodrop, LAS, Summer Contrast and Audioriver in my homecountry (Poland) … Of course some of them I do remember very warm and sentimentally for various reasons. Dragon Dreaming Festival in Australia is definitely one of them! Amazing spot, lovely people, wonderful nature, beautiful music, loads of new friends, and closest person spending time with you there, what you need more? Also I can’t forget that indescribable feeling to hear own music on the other side of the planet played on the festival in several sets by great local artists. It was simply amazing!

What was your best gig ever?

Oh, there were many. I don’t want to exaggerate, but having played for over 20 years, there could have been hundreds of them. To this day, every gig is very special to me, so it’s hard to choose a specific one.

How did you come to your artist/stage name?

That’s a really loooong story haha! To make it short, I started with making music, DJing came later. So instead of the popular “DJ” before the nickname in the early 00’s, I’ve picked “CJ”, which was supposed to mean “computer jay”, a person who makes music with computers etc., I’ve also been releasing under other aliases, including Tetragrammaton and Spiral In-Groove (on JOOF Recordings in 2006 with my friend Viscid). Currently I mainly play and release as CJ Art, but also as Mental Traveler (ambient, psybient, progressive-chill & similar) or Artelized (faster psychedelic music).

Your favourite synthetisers?

I’m a software guy, but when it comes to hardware, I will not be original, Moog is my favorite :)

Can you briefly describe how do you produce your music?

Ahh, every time it’s different! Sometimes an idea pops into my head and I do my best to bring it to life, and sometimes I just start with a “blank sheet“ and let the “creation“ to take me on a unknown journey :)

Do you master it by yourself?

Mainly, yes :)

What is your relationship to the fire?

I love warmth, haha :D

What do you consider to be the greatest success of yours?

I think I could tell that having great friends and playing music for 23 years ;) I started very, very early, and believe me, it wasn’t easy. Especially that I never had this craving for media attenion, so you can imagine how difficult it was for me and still is haha ;) Also there are ups and downs in life, you decide to give up normal, peaceful and setteled kind of a life, but I’d say that maintaining passion (in a very active way) for such a long time is probably the biggest chalange I’ve ever taken, but also the most beautiful journey. It’s like with every kind of love i think – it’s never easy and you have to work on it and care about it all the time ;)

What did the psytrance/psychedelic culture give you?

To make it short, it opened my mind to many things :)

What do you do to have some fun/ how do you relax?

I love spending time with my wife, friends, I love walking, sightseeing, being in nature, mountains, good movies, books, different form of arts and of course listening to music, I simply can’t live without it ;)

How do you imagine perfect Saturday morning on the festival?

Warm and sunny day with a gentle, refreshing wind, wonderful nature around, great people and beautiful music. Oh yes!

Beer or wine?

Tea! I’ma teaholic :) But if I had to choose beer, dark beer.
