Interview

What is your inspiration? What music do you listen to/are you influenced by? As a band, our inspiration comes from a wide range of musical styles and artists. From world music to electronic, we find inspiration in many different genres and forms. One of our biggest inspirations is Anoushka Shankar, a renowned Indian classical musician. We also find inspiration in our friends and peers, such as Wild Marmalade and Hilight Tribe, who have made a significant impact in the music industry with their unique and innovative sounds. Our love for music and the creative process drives us to continuously explore new sounds and push the boundaries of what is possible. This diverse range of influences allows us to create music that is fresh, exciting, and truly our own. What are you bringing to Bohemia? Have you ever been here? We are thrilled to announce that we will be returning to the Czech Republic for a show with OliveTreeDance. As a duo, we will be showcasing our Synthesis project, and we can’t wait for the fans in Bohemia to experience it. Our love for music and the art of performance is evident in every show, and we’re eager to share that energy with the Czech audience. This is our third time performing in the Czech Republic, and we are looking forward to connecting with the local music community and fans. We are confident that our Synthesis project will be well-received and we can’t wait to take the stage and bring our music to life. How do you see the Czech psychedelic/psytrance scene compared to others?  The Czech Republic is known for its thriving electronic music scene, particularly in the psytrance genre. It has a dedicated and passionate community of fans who support the local and international artists who perform there. The Czech psytrance scene is often seen as a hub for innovative and cutting-edge music, with many artists pushing the boundaries of the genre and creating new and exciting sounds. In comparison to other scenes, the Czech Republic has a unique and dynamic energy that sets it apart and draws fans from all over the world. Overall, the Czech psychedelic/psytrance scene is considered one of the strongest and most innovative in the world, and continues to be a major player in the global psytrance community. Your favourite festival? What was your best gig ever? As a band, we are grateful to have the opportunity to play at various festivals and events in different scenes and markets. Each festival has its unique energy and vibe, making it impossible to pick a favorite. However, some of the standout experiences for us have been playing at Boom Festival, Festival de Musica do Mundo in Portugal, Universo Parallelo in Brazil, Shankra Festival in Switzerland, and SXSW in Austin, Texas. These festivals have allowed us to reach massive crowds, with some even having over half a million attendees. The thrill of playing outdoors and being able to connect with so many fans is truly a memorable experience. How did you come to your artist/stage name?  Our artist/stage name, OliveTreeDance, reflects our roots in the traditional sounds of wooden instruments, particularly the didgeridoo. The name is a nod to our founder Renato Oliveira, who first brought the didgeridoo into our musical style, and it also represents the organic growth and expansion of our sound through our collaborations with other musicians and our incorporation of diverse instruments and styles. Choosing our name was a natural and effortless process, as it encompasses the essence of our music and mission. The “OliveTree” symbolizes our connection to traditional and organic sounds, while “Dance” represents the energy and rhythm that drives our performances. Our goal is to bring people together and create a dynamic, inclusive space for dance and celebration, and we feel that our name perfectly captures that spirit. Your favourite synthesizers? Can you briefly describe how you produce your music? Do you master it by yourself? We do music with instruments, we are now approaching the synths for our backing tracks, we are still learning the process. These synthesizers are known for their unique sound design capabilities and have been used in a wide range of musical genres, from electronic and pop to rock and jazz

What is your relationship to the fire? As a band playing tribal music, our relationship with fire is one of respect and reverence. Fire is a powerful element that can bring people together, and we seek to harness that energy in our performances. Our music is danceable, designed for those who love to juggle and play in the circus style, and we often incorporate fire into our shows to enhance the sensory experience. Whether it’s through flaming drumsticks, fire poi, or fire juggling, we believe that the heat and light of the fire add an extra level of excitement to our performances. So, in short, we have a deep and meaningful relationship with fire, and it is a key component of our tribal music and performance style What do you consider to be the greatest success of yours? As a band, we consider “The Airport Tunnel,” “Bezouro,” and “Transcendence” to be some of our greatest achievements and proudest moments in our career. These tracks represent the hard work and dedication we put into our music and performances, and the positive response we’ve received from fans and critics alike has been truly humbling. However, for us, the greatest success of our career is the connection we’ve made with our fans and the community we’ve built through our music. Seeing people come together and enjoy our performances is what drives us to continue creating and performing. Whether it’s through live shows, recordings, or online interactions, the connection we have with our fans is what truly makes us feel successful. So, while “The Airport Tunnel,” “Bezouro,” and “Transcendence” are certainly highlights of our career, the greatest success for us as a band is the impact we’ve had on people and the memories we’ve helped create through our music What did the psytrance/psychedelic culture give you? As a band with a 18-year career in the international psytrance scene, we have received so much from the psytrance/psychedelic culture. This vibrant and diverse community has given us the opportunity to travel the world, perform for incredible audiences, and collaborate with some of the most talented and passionate artists in the genre. The psytrance/psychedelic culture has also given us a sense of belonging and purpose. Through our music and performances, we have found a way to connect with people from all walks of life, and this connection has been truly profound. We’ve been able to use our music as a way to spread positive messages and bring people together, and this is something that we are incredibly grateful for. Furthermore, the psytrance/psychedelic culture has inspired us to continue pushing the boundaries of our music and exploring new sounds and styles. This genre is constantly evolving, and we are always learning and growing as artists, both creatively and personally. In conclusion, the psytrance/psychedelic culture has given us so much, including the opportunity to make a positive impact on the world, a sense of belonging and purpose, and the inspiration to continue exploring new sounds and styles. We are incredibly grateful for all that this amazing community has given us. What do you do to have some fun/how do you relax? How do you imagine a perfect Saturday morning at the festival? Beer or wine? As a band, we love to unwind by jamming with friends and exploring the great outdoors. Whether it’s hiking, camping, or simply taking in the beauty of nature, we find that these activities help us recharge and refocus. A perfect Saturday morning at a festival for us would involve waking up to the sounds of music and the buzz of excitement in the air. After a quick breakfast, we would spend some time exploring the festival grounds and checking out the other performers. As the day progresses, we would make our way to the stage, where we would bring our music to life and connect with the audience. As for drinks, we enjoy both beer and wine, depending on the occasion. Beer is a staple of many festivals and is a great way to socialize and relax, while wine is perfect for more intimate gatherings and more formal events. Ultimately, we believe that the most important thing is to enjoy good company and good drinks, regardless of whether it’s beer or wine
